The job role of a Fashion and Retail Buyer is to produce a profitable range for their buying department whether it is womenswear, menswear, childrenswear, fashion accessories, footwear, lingerie or homeware. With a focus that the range showcases the fashion brands identity and fits the fashion brands customer profile. It is essential for a Buyer to be ahead of the fashion trends, being able to take catwalk/Interior trends and convert them to accessible products which fit the fashion company's consumer whether this is luxury, high street or value.
The Buyer has a number of direct reports these are the Junior Buyer, Assistant Buyer and Buyers Admin Assistant. The Buyer reports directly into the fashion/retail Buying Director/Controller. The Buyer works very closely with the Fashion Designers, Merchandisers, Visual Merchandisers, at the start of each season from trend concept, budgets, OTB (open to buy), option counts through to production and in store visuals.
A Buyer is an essential part of the Monday morning buying meetings and will also contribute to the buying strategy meetings as well as present their figures and ranges to the rest of the fashion/retail departments and the board of Directors.
The job role of a Buyer will also involve going on overseas factory visits and inspirational shops throughout the year, negotiation with their fashion suppliers is an essential part of the role, making sure the product arrives on time and suppliers are paid.
