The international job search - 5 things to consider if you want to relocate overseas

International blog

Have you ever thought about relocating for work? Maybe it has been something you have been thinking and planning for a while, or maybe the current pandemic has made you re-evaluate what it is you want from your career.

I have worked with experienced expats and also those embarking on a new journey. Even for those experienced there is still a lot to consider when it comes to a new location. I have put together a checklist of things to consider before starting an exciting international move:

  1. Have you spoken to family and friends? This is even more important if you have a partner and/or children. Are they all on board with this? If you have a partner, will they continue working – also think about the industry they are in and whether it would be feasible for them to find work. If you have children, lots of companies don’t cover school fees, so always research school fee costs. Some parts of world for example Hong Kong will take a sizeable amount from your pay cheque. Luckily globally there are very good international schools.
  2. Think about your driving factor, why now? What do you want to gain from this experience? This is a big move so really tune into what it is YOU want!
  3. Lots of countries have minimum education qualifications to get a visa for entry to work (it is different to a business visa) so have your qualifications to hand.
  4. Location! Location! Location! The world is your oyster right? True, but not everywhere will be to your liking. Really look at locations you can consider, do your research on the country, the culture, and of course what will things be like socially. Lots of places you may not even think about until a job comes up but it will be good to get an idea of different locations.
  5. Getting practical: Do you own your own home or is it rented? What will you do if you left your main base? It is important to remember you will only be taking a case or two of clothes plus your laptop etc and maybe some personal items like photos.

Working internationally is such a rewarding experience career wise and personally and is a great thing to do. However, it is really important to consider the above as it will help you to prepare you for the journey towards your new role. Unlike recruitment here in the UK or within your own country, getting a role abroad can be a more lengthy process after offer; the visa process can be the longest bit.

Be assured though I will guide you through the process, and the companies I recruit for are supportive to their new employees too.
