Why temping could be the next best step in your career

Why temping could be the next best step in your career

Whether you’re a university student, are in between jobs at the moment or are just looking to gain experience in something different, temping could be a great way of increasing your exposure in the industry while fitting around your schedule. I’ve rounded up 6 reasons as to why temping could be the next best step in your career below!

Temping can help you gain great experience quickly!

If you are starting out in your career and are keen to build experience then temping could be a great route to go down as it exposes to you a broad range of responsibilities, people and systems so you can build on your CV quickly by completing a few different temp roles. It also allows you to ‘try before you buy’, so if you are unsure on which area of the industry you want to go into you can work in different roles before settling on the one that’s right for you. It can also give you the opportunity to see what you prefer as an employee or recognise passions that you never knew you had, as well as realise what you may want to avoid moving forward, as well as being great for international candidates who need experience in the UK market for whichever permanent role they want to go into.

Temp roles are flexible…

…So if you’re planning on a career change, going travelling or heading back to uni temp work can help you work around your schedule as it allows you to decide when you work and when you don’t.

Temp work can lead to permanent opportunities.

Lots of temp roles have permanent potential. If you’re working hard in your role and are proving yourself then employers will often consider taking you on on a permanent basis, or even if there’s no permanent role at that stage they may remember you when a role next comes up. For this reason temping can also be great for networking and building relationships within the industry.

Temping looks good on your CV when you’re job hunting!

We are in a really tough market at the moment and if you still haven’t found your next perfect permanent opportunity then temping could be a great stop-gap on your CV while you’re job hunting. It shows commerciality and adaptability as well as the fact that you’ve taken initiative and gone out to seek new experiences during a hard time (and not to mention it can help to pay the bills!)

You still get employee benefits

As a temp, you are entitled to pay into a pension and receive holiday and sick pay. You are also entitled to the same pay as permanent employees after 12 weeks of temping in the same assignment and other perks, such as bonus schemes and commission.

It’s a great networking opportunity

Temping is a good way of seeing how different businesses operate, networking within your industry and building contacts in companies which could lead to job opportunities later down the line.

I want to temp… but how do I start?

We run a very busy temps department here at Fashion Personnel, so if you are available immediately and looking for your next opportunity then please get in touch with us at temps@fashionpersonnel.co.uk.
