Working internationally is thoroughly rewarding! Every day I get to speak with different clients and candidates from all over the world, learning new things all the time.
Each morning starts at different times depending on what time zones I am working with. For the majority of my roles, I headhunt candidates as they are usually for a very specific vacancy which can require certain skills that generally advertising doesn’t typically work for. The bulk of my day is headhunting, screening candidates, arranging interviews, negotiating offers/packages and speaking to clients and candidates over the phone, FaceTime, Skype or Zoom.
Whether I am recruiting for designers in Barcelona, Sales Managers in Dubai, Factory Managers in the Far East or Technologists in Bangladesh, no two days are the same!
I feel that recruitment should always have a personal touch and international recruitment requires that even more so, as I am speaking to people who are going to make one of the biggest moves of their lives. It may be their first international venture, or they may be moving away from family and friends, so I like to be there for support and offer guidance outside of just briefing them on the job and managing the interview process. This makes my network stronger as my candidates often become friends and I’ve built some great relationships.
A big part of my role is to find out more about the locations, languages and visa requirements to provide as much information as possible. Having an understanding of different locations is so helpful when initially speaking to candidates looking at their next role, that way I can give them a good understanding and idea of the location to deal with any questions they have already.
On the international desk I work with all types of business including brands, retailers, manufacturers, suppliers and sourcing offices. The roles cover all areas in the industry; there is nothing that can’t be filled! For me the most important thing is to be adaptable, proactive and approachable tailoring each conversation to the individual.
